Did you know there are two completely different types of birds called a yellowhammer? The one that's the state bird of Alabama is also referred to as a Northern Fiicker and is a type of woodpecker and no relation at all to the other bird also called a yellowhammer which I did draw a pretty picture of for this state bird design before learning that it has nothing at all to do with Alabama. As for why the woodpecker type of yellowhammer is the state bird of Alabama it has something to do with some old school military uniforms that had some yellow trim much like the yellow that you'll find on the underside of the Alabama yellowhammer's wings.
